If you plan to spend time in the backcountry, you need to be prepared. Fast paced and hands-on, this two day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel and work in the outdoors.

This course is pre-approved by the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other governmental agencies.

Upon successful course completion you will earn a WMI of NOLS WFR or WEMT certification.

Backcountry Cooking

This course will cover the three main meals in the backcountry by adding a gourmet dimension. It will also cover an introduction to various stove options used in the backcountry . There will be mixture of fresh, dehydrated and packaged ingredients available for your selection. After picking the dish you wish to prepare, cooking will commence with tips and tricks for your preparation. Group discussion and comments will follow.

Survival Seminar

Guest instructor Byron Kerns, a former US Air Force SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) instructor will provide opportunities to gain skills and knowledge and better understand wilderness survival.  This seminar is especially helpful for those with an interest in wilderness survival but with busy schedules and limited time. Spend 6-hours with one of the best survival instructors in the country and leave amazed at the information you've learned (not to mention the fun and laughs you had).

The seminar will be conducted in a 12-person classroom setting, as well as outdoors. A one-hour break for lunch will be provided; bring a bag lunch or eat off-site. The day will conclude with Byron's "gotta-do-it" written test commencing at 4:30 PM. The winner will receive a "small trinket or three."

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN AND DO.
The seminar will address the seven wilderness survival priorities - Positive Mental Attitude, Wilderness First Aid, Shelter, Fire Making, Signaling, Water, and Food - and the components of each. In addition, knots, lashings, lost behavior, and the topographic map will be taught.

Participants will have the opportunity outdoors to make individual fires by various means, including flint & steel and fire by friction. Also, participants will construct shelters outdoors using natural and man-made materials, as well as learn how to properly use a signal mirror. It will be a non-stop ride of teaching, learning, and story telling - all focused around wilderness survival.

Leave No Trace Awareness

Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb.

Included in the Awareness workshop

Participants will receive introductory training in the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace. Workshop topics include the underlying ethics and seven principles:

·     Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
·     Dispose of Waste Properly
·     Leave What You Find
·     Minimize Campfire Impacts
·     Respect Wildlife
·     Be Considerate of Other Visitors

Backpacking 101

This course is designed to prepare backpackers of all skill levels for safe and fun adventures into the great outdoors.

Course will cover a broad range of topics and skills including trip planning, tent selection, water filtration, stove selection and other instruction for back country travel. This will be a great introduction to backpacking!

Classes can be taken as preparation for our guided trips (highly recommended) or just to
expand your knowledge for individual adventures.


Basic Navigation

Location: South Entrance of San Felasco

This course will aid you in honing your navigational skills.

After finding your pace and covering compass basics such as taking a bearing and shooting a bearing, you will have to navigate to your destination.
Compass will be provided.
